Aggressive & Territorial – Not recommended for community type setups.
The Jewel Cichlid originates from Africa where they live in streams and river systems with mud bottoms. They are very hardy and should tolerate a range of water conditions, but may only breed in tanks with water on the acidic side and slightly elevated tank temperature.
The Jewel Cichlid can be quite aggressive, even more so when they form pairs and start breeding.

Temperature Range – 22 - 28°C
pH Range – 6.0 – 7.8
Special Requirements - They are relatively easy to keep and are very hardy, tolerating a range of water conditions.
Tanks Mates and Compatibility – Jewel Cichlids should not be kept with small fish. If kept as part of a Cichlid community then the tank mates need to be robust and tolerant! The tank needs to be spacious. Tiger Barbs or similar do seem to keep out of their way pretty well.
Feeding – They are not fussy eaters, accepting flakes and pellets along with live and frozen food.
